So you got some lovely roses for Valentine’s Day and now they’re fading.  Don’t toss them just yet!  There are so many ways you can still reap an aromatic harvest of benefits from these power-packed lovelies.  Let’s discuss five.  (You can use these methods for other flower varities, as well, not just roses.)

.

Experiment with adding other plant products to your rose bath concoction -- herbal teas tossed into your mix are wonderful and medicinal!

Experiment with adding other plant products to your rose bath concoction — herbal teas tossed into your mix are wonderful and medicinal!

.

1. ROSE BATH: Toss the petals into a steamy bath.  Fast, easy, beautiful and a GREAT way to relax after a long day.  For added luxury and skin-nourishment, pour in a cup or two of milk.  Hey, it worked for Cleopatra!

.

2.  ROSE FACIAL MASK: Rose petals, honey, plain yogurt — that’s all you need for an amazing, skin-rejuvinating, DIY facial.  Use a food processor or grinder to grate the petals into small pieces.  (Alternately, you can rip them, cut or chop them until crushed.) Add roughly a tablespoon each of yogurt and honey until it reaches your desired consistency.  Apply to face and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Voilá!  Visibly cleaner, smoother, brighter skin.

.

3. DIY DRIED ROSE KEEPSAKE: The first year that Love Muffin and I were married, I dried the petals of a bouquet of roses he’d given me, then placed them in an empty (washed and dried) bottle of wine that has special meaning to us.  They’re pretty to display and a sweet reminder of special memories.

.

When you’re drying your own flower petals, let them sit on a paper towel for several days.  Choose any kind of pretty bottle that you would like to display.  You can even add dried leaves,  fruit rinds, or other plant products that you think of.

Rose-Water

.

4. ROSE WATER FACIAL MIST/TONER: It’s easier than you might think!  Instead of spending scads of hard-earned $mula$ on high-end facial sprays, make your own.  Make sure you use organic or home-grown flowers to ensure your product doesn’t have pesticides or other chemicals in it!

.

Start off with a glass bowl full of your rose petals.  Pour enough boiling water (distilled or purified)  into the bowl to fully cover the petals.  Cover and let sit until it’s cooled off completely.  Strain the pink water into a pretty jar (if you’ll be applying with a cotton ball) or a misting bottle.  That’s it!  This doesn’t have a preservative, so use it up within a week.  Keeping it in the fridge will prolong it’s life and will also be a refreshing treat for your skin in hot weather.

.

FoodRosePetalSalad

.

5. Rose Salad: Toss your petals into your next salad!  No, I’ve not gone mad…..not entirely, anyway. ;D  According to Livestrong.com, eating rose petals and other flower varieties is common place around the world in both cuisine and medicine!  Again, be sure your flowers are organic.  You’ll find that different colors and varieties have different flavors and sweetness levels, plus different types of vitamins, minerals and healing nutrients!

.

Which idea do you like best?  What are YOU going to do with your leftover holiday flowers?!

.

Cheers! xo

Birchbox, June 2012

June 9, 2012

.

.

Birchbox’s June theme is travel — one of my favorite things!

.

.

.

Products include:

  • Apothederm, Stretch Mark Cream.  Meh. Worth a shot?  We’ll see.  I’ve had trillions of babies, so I’m probably an ideal candidate to test this out.

.

.

.

  • Clean Well, Hand Sanitizing Wipes.  Double Meh. =/  I’ll pop them in my purse, so not a lost cause, anyway. :)

.

.

  • Scalisi Skincare, Anti-Aging Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30.  It’s always fun to try new face junk, so yay!!

.

.

  • the Balm cosmetics, Stainiac in Beauty Queen.  I’m most excited about trying this little honey.  It’s a lip and cheek stain in a dark bloood red.  The last lip stain I used was some drugstore product and it bit.  Left my smoocher dry and angry like toast. >:O  Not a good look.  Peeps, remember to exfoliate before you use a lip stain.  A wet toothbrush does the job fine. :)

.

.

.

  • Band-Aid, Cynthia Rowley Dress Up Band-Aids.  This is a full size 20-piece band-aid set and they’re adorable.  Mondo likey.

.

.

  • John Varvatos, Star USA, Cologne.  Blah, blah, blah.   I’ll likely use this on *myself* not the men in my life, but you know, whatever.  :D

.

.

So did you get your Birchbox yet this month?  And what’d you think?!  Yay or Nay?!

Awesome weekend to you!!!!

When you purchase a bottle of one of Atelier Cologne’s fine fragrances, included in the packaging is an insert with instructions on obtaining a free, metal funnel meant to help keep your smaller bottles stocked.  After requesting my free funnel, I shortly thereafter received not only the funnel, but two other frangrance sample packs, as well as a hand-written note from “Ross”  with layering suggestions.

.

.

It would have been so much more convenient to simply send the funnel and be done with it.  Sending more samples and a very kind, thoughtful note, which was personal to my order, took more time, effort and consideration.  But it’s these small things that stick in a customer’s mind and it’s really the small things that mark excellence.

Thank you, Atelier Cologne and thank you, Ross!

Cheers! :) :)

“This tribute to female beauty signals contemporary elegance embodied by a woman with an instinctively classic sense of style. Her essence is a soft, rosy floral designed around a bouquet that evokes precious, delicate sensuality. Petal by petal, the scent reveals a timeless rose blend that channels the heritage of the consummate Italian fashion brand.

Notes:
Pink Grapefruit, Mandarin, Peach, Muguet, Bulgarian Rose, Peony, Geranium, Madonna Lily, Plum, Ambrette Seed, Vanilla, Amber, Musk.”  Sephora Website

.

I don’t care for floral scents, but Rose The One, by Dolce & Gabbana is an exception.  It’s bright, elegant, sophisticated and classic with just enough sweetness to keep it from being overly mature.  This year-round appropriate perfume does not last all day, so if you want to switch to something more sultry for evening hours, you’re free to do so.
